The eVect of exposure to asynchronous audio, visual, and tactile stimulus combinations on the perception of simultaneity

چکیده
Information about an event takes diVerent amounts of time to be processed depending on which sensory system the event activates. However, despite the variations in processing time for lights and sounds, the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) for brieXy presented audio/ visual stimuli is usually close to true simultaneity. Here we conWrm that the simultaneity constancy mechanism that achieves this for audio/visual stimulus pairs is adaptable, and extend the investigation to other multimodal combinations. We measured the PSS and just noticeable diVerences (JNDs) for temporal order judgements for three stimulus combinations (sound/light, sound/touch, and light/touch) before and after repeated exposure to each one of these pairs presented with a 100 ms asynchrony (i.e., nine adapttest combinations). Only the perception of simultaneity of the sound/light pair was aVected by our exposure regime: the PSS shifted after exposure to either a temporally staggered sound/light or light/touch pair, and the JND decreased following exposure to a sound/touch pair. No changes were found in the PSSs or JNDs of sound/touch or light/touch pairs following exposure to any of the three time-staggered combinations. Participants’ reaction times (RT) to the three stimuli were also tested before and after each adaptation exposure. In general, exposure did not aVect attention or processing time; the only change in RTs (of the 9 tested) was an increased RT for light following exposure to a sound/light pair with light leading. We suggest that the neural correlates of multisensory sound/light processing are resynchronised by a separate, more Xexible simultaneity constancy mechanism than the light/touch or the sound/touch simultaneity processing systems.

Recalibration of multisensory simultaneity: cross-modal transfer coincides with a change in perceptual latency.
After exposure to asynchronous sound and light stimuli, perceived audio-visual synchrony changes to compensate for the asynchrony. Here we investigate to what extent this audio-visual recalibration effect transfers to visual-tactile and audio-tactile simultaneity perception in order to infer the mechanisms responsible for temporal recalibration. Results indicate that audio-visual recalibration ...
متن کاملTemporal recalibration to tactile-visual asynchronous stimuli.
Here we demonstrate that the perceptual system adapts to tactile-visual temporal asynchronies (i.e., temporal recalibration). Participants were exposed to a train of tactile and visual stimuli with a constant time lag (either -100ms, 0ms, or 100ms; with negative values indicating that the tactile stimulus came first). Following exposure, they were presented tactile-visual test stimulus pairs an...
متن کاملEffects of Voluntary Movements on Audio-Tactile Temporal Order Judgment
The present study aims to investigate the effect of voluntary movements on human temporal perception in multisensory integration. We therefore performed temporal order judgment (TOJ) tasks in audio-tactile integration under three conditions: no movement, involuntary movement, and voluntary movement. It is known that the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) under the no movement condition, tha...

Background. The No Return Point hypothesis is one of the research areas that has been done in line with the motor program. In this hypothesis emphasized an inability to inhibition move after its start by the motor program. Several factors are affecting the mechanism of this inhibition. Objectives. In this study, we investigate the effects of audio and visual stimuli on blocking quick moves to ...
متن کاملPerceptual Aspects of Auditory-tactile Asynchrony
This paper addresses the temporal factors involved in the integration of auditory and tactile information. Perceptual threshold values for auditory-tactile asynchrony were measured using a broadband noise for the auditory stimulus (presented to the subjects via headphones) and a sinusoidal wave for the tactile stimulus (presented at the tip of the index finger via a shaker). In the first experi...
